Bothun Wins Two CHA Awards This Week

WINTRHOP, Mass. – Penn State women’s hockey sophomore goaltender Josie Bothun (Wyoming, Minn.) brought in two CHA awards this week as she was tabbed the CHA goaltender of the week and the January goaltender of the month as announced by the league office.

The weekly award is Bothun’s sixth and she has won three of four monthly honors from the league this season, adding to her Penn State single-season record totals in both categories.

Bothun was excellent in goal in Penn State’s sweep of Mercyhurst last weekend to help the Nittany Lions move into a tie atop the CHA standings. She allowed just two goals for the weekend with 22 saves last Friday and 26 more on Saturday.

11 of her 22 saves on Friday came in the third period and that allowed Penn State to make a comeback to win 2-1 in overtime after trailing 1-0 early in the third.

For the month, Bothun was 4-2-1 with a 1.78 GAA and .925 save percentage. Two of her wins were shutouts (vs. BU Jan. 2 and at RIT Jan. 14) to bring her season total to six and PSU-record career total to 10.

Bothun and Penn State’s defense have been tough to score on all season long, as the Nittany Lions have allowed two-or-less goals in 19 of 25 games played this season.

Bothun’s 2022 numbers are as follows: 14-8-3 record in 25 starts, 1.85 GAA, .919 save percentage with six shutouts. She leads the CHA in starts, minutes played (1455:49), and GAA.

Bothun and the Nittany Lions host Syracuse in a battle of the league’s top two teams this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5, at Pegula Ice Arena. Friday’s game starts at 6 p.m. with Saturday’s scheduled for 2 p.m.
