I’m done with 3-on-3 overtime.

A few years ago when it was instituted in the NHL, it was exciting. Players were scrambling and trading scoring chances up and down the sheet for five minutes. Usually, the game ended.

It’s evolved over time and it’s not fun anymore. Even with the best players in the world, it’s lost its shine.

College hockey mandated 3-on-3 overtime this year, and it’s been a total debacle.

Now that coaches have learned how to play it, they’ve adjusted. Almost every overtime game I’ve seen this season (spanning every conference) has been five minutes of teams regrouping and playing keep-away with the opponent. Same thing in the NHL.

It doesn’t create offense. It’s a goofy gimmick that the NHL should get rid of, and college hockey should have never…
