Canada erased an early two-goal deficit to open its women’s worlds schedule with a win
GAME STATS: CANADA 5, FINLAND 3
CALGARY, Alta. – Sarah Fillier (Georgetown, Ont./Princeton University,
ECAC) scored with 12:22 to go, just 25 seconds after Finland had tied the
game, to lead Canada’s National Women’s Team to a 5-3 win over the Finns in
its Group A opener Friday at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
It was the first Team Canada game at a women’s worlds in 860 days – since
April 14, 2019, a 7-0 win over Russia in the bronze medal game in Espoo,
Finland. The 2020 tournament was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, as was
the first attempted 2021 iteration in the spring.
Elisa Holopainen brought the Finns even in the third period against the
flow of play, but Fillier found space in the slot and knocked a Natalie
Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) feed through goaltender Anni Keisala to put
Canada ahead for good.
