The Pittsburgh Penguins took to the ice for their Tuesday morning skate without a few faces.

And, in response, they’ve made a subsequent move.

Forward Tommy Novak – injured during Sunday’s 3-1 win against the Minnesota Wild – did not partake in practice, and neither did defenseman Ryan Shea. As a result, Pittsburgh recalled forward Matt Nieto and defenseman Sebastian Aho from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton – Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate – on an emergency basis.

Nieto, 32, was placed on waivers by the Penguins on Feb. 26. He cleared and was re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre, where he registered one goal and three points in eight games. In 31 NHL games this season, he also has one goal and three points.

Aho, 29, was signed to a two-year deal worth $775,000 annually during the 2024 offseason. He has spent the entirety of the 2024-25 season at the AHL level and has dealt with injuries for much of it.

In 17 AHL games this season, Aho has seven points and is a minus-1.
