PRINCETON, N.J. – The Big Green travelled to Princeton to face the Tigers, Saturday, in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs, their first postseason appearance since 2015. Dartmouth allowed two goals in the first period and were not able to comeback, falling to the Tigers 5-1.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard just under nine minutes into the first period. A holding penalty sent Princeton on the power play where they were able to double their lead and take a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Princeton added two more goals in the second period before the Big Green were able to get on the board. Anne Averill ripped a shot from the point that Hamilton Doster tipped beyond Princeton’s goaltender to make the score 4-1. The call on the ice was no goal, but a successful challenge proved the puck was not tipped above the cross bar, allowing the goal to stand.
The Big Green were seconds away from pulling goaltender Hann Humphreys toward the end of the third period when the puck got behind the Big Green defense. Sarah Fillier was able to score her third goal of the game on a breakaway, securing the 5-1 victory for the Tigers and a trip to the quarterfinals.
Humphreys kept the game close, stopping 49 of the 54 shots they faced, including 24 saves through the first 20 minutes of play. The Big Green were held to only 18 shots on goal.
The Big Green graduate five seniors, including Humphreys, and will look to build off this season and continue in a positive direction with help from returning players including Averill and Doster, as well as the incoming class.
