UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Former Penn State field hockey standouts Phia Gladieux and Jenny Rizzo competed for Team USA as the U.S. Women’s National Team battled Ireland in the Cathy Bessant International Series against New Zealand. The games, played in Charlotte, N.C., were contested last weekend.
The United States shut out No. 10 New Zealand 3-0 to begin Independence Day weekend. Gladieux scored the game’s first goal with a backhand flick into the cage late in the second period. Team USA closed out the weekend with another 3-0 shutout win over the Black Sticks. Gladieux scored once again, getting a touch after Meredith Sholder sent the ball into the circle to give Team USA a 2-0 lead at the time.
Rizzo and Gladieux both continue their efforts with Team USA throughout the summer. The roster for the Pan American games will be announced soon by USA Field Hockey.
