Game 1 was a disaster for the New Jersey Devils in a multitude of ways. In actuality, Jacob Markstrom was one of the very few bright spots for the team, stopping 41 of 44 (.932%) and keeping them in a game that the Carolina Hurricanes completely dominated.

Unfortunately, one bad, heat of the moment decision negated any good feeling in Markstrom’s play. With 11:26 left in the third period, he was frustrated with Andrei Svechnikov and went to give him a whack with his stick. Devils’ teammate Cody Glass skated by at the same time, and Markstrom caught 100% Glass and 0% Svechnikov. Glass immediately went down and did not return.

On Monday morning, Markstrom told media, “Whatever everyone has been seeing, that’s what happened. I mean, it’s pretty clear-cut, and obviously I feel really bad…it’s a situation that didn’t have to happen and it was a heat of the moment play, unfortunately, and I felt bad for Glasser. You don’t want to see or be the reason that anyone goes down, but hopefully it’s not as bad (as it looks).”

As of head coach Sheldon Keefe’s most recent media availability, there is no update on Glass or the other injured Devils players (Brenden Dillon and Luke Hughes). Like Glass, Dillon did not return for the rest of the game but was “eager” to return according to Keefe; Hughes returned for two late third period shifts – 36 and 28 seconds, respectively, but appeared to be grimacing on the bench in between.

According to MoneyPuck, the Devils still have a 28.5% chance to move on to the second round. But that will significantly drop if they can’t win Game 2 in Carolina, where the Hurricanes have lost just 10 of 42 games this season (including Game 1).
