Coaches Schafer and Cashman Among Those Sanctioned

CHN Staff Report

Cornell coach Mike Schafer and Dartmouth coach Reid Cashman were among those suspended for this weekend’s games, following a post-game brawl between the two teams at Lynah Rink last weekend.

Three players from each team received game disqualifications in the incident, with at least two more receiving suspensions for Friday’s game.

This information has been determined from reporters at the arenas, judging by who is in the arena. It should be noted that the ECAC has a policy where it doesn’t officially announce supplemental discipline. That policy has been in place since 2018.

Dartmouth defeated Cornell, 6-1, last Saturday at Lynah Rink. Amid Dartmouth’s post-game celebration, a brawl broke out, leading to 128 minutes in penalties.

Cornell players Kyle Penney, Jack O’Leary and Hoyt Stanley were giving game disqualifications, which carries an automatic one-game suspension. Dartmouth DQs were handed out to John Fusco, Ian Pierce and Jack Silverberg.

In addition, Cornell forwards Ondrej Psenicka and Nick DeSantis were not in the lineup for Friday’s game at St. Lawrence. DeSantis could be seen on video throwing punches at a Dartmouth player, but was not given a DQ at the time.

As a result, Cornell dressed just nine forwards (including listed defenseman Jack O’Brien, who has played some forward before), along with eight defensemen, for Friday’s game. It already had four other players injured and not playing, Sean Donaldson, Winter Wallace, Charlie Major and Liam Devlin.

According to sources, Schafer, who is in his final season as head coach at Cornell, did not make the trip at all to the North Country, so may also be missing Saturday’s game at Clarkson. Schafer is also scheduled to miss two home games next weekend in order to attend his son’s wedding.
