East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s David Gucciardi was named the Big Ten’s Second Star of the Week on Tuesday Jan. 28.
Gucciardi had two goals and two assists in MSU’s win and tie against No. 4/3 Minnesota, helping the Spartans create some separation at the top of the Big Ten standings. Gucciardi had a two-goal effort in Friday’s victory, which was his first two-goal game since the GLI in his freshman winter in 2021. He assisted on two of MSU’s three goals in the 3-3 deadlock on Saturday.
Gucciardi and the Spartan defense accounted for four goals and 15 points in the two games against Minnesota, its highest offensive output in any series this season. His season scoring line now sits at 4-8-12, career bests in both assists and points. He is a +17, which is third on the team and second among defensemen.
MSU has had one of the Big Ten’s three stars of the Week 12 times in 13 weekends of countable games this season. Isaac Howard has four weekly awards, Charlie Stramel and Daniel Russell two, and four players have one weekly award each: Gucciardi, goaltenders Trey Augustine and Luca Di Pasquo, and freshman forward Shane Vansaghi.
The Spartans, the first team to 20 wins in college hockey this season, remain at No. 2 in the national polls this week and have opened up a five-point lead atop the Big Ten standings (20-3-3, 11-2-3 B1G). Michigan State heads to Columbus this weekend to take on the 11th-ranked Buckeyes on Thursday and Friday.
