No. 12 Women’s Hockey Sweeps Syracuse with 5-2 Victory – Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 12 Penn State women’s hockey team completed the series sweep of Syracuse with a 5-2 victory over the Orange on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED   

  • Lyndie Lobdell fed the puck to Maddy Christian from the far slot, then Christian tipped the puck into the net to score the first goal of the game on the power-play with 6:16 left in the first period.  
  • The Orange responded 22 seconds into the second period as feeds from the offensive blue line by Bryn Saarela and Celia Wiegand went into the stick of Charli Kettyle as she scored to even the score 1-1.  
  • With 1:37 into the third period, Abby Stonehouse sent the puck straight into the net as she rushed into the wall and avoided Syracuse defenders to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead. 
  • With 11:37 left in the third period, Leah Stecker found the back of the net off a rebound by the netminder as she laid the puck into the net to give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead.  
  • Seconds later, a pair of feeds by Lobdell and Grace Outwater from the opposite end of the ice landed in the stick Stella Retrum who recorded the Nittany Lions’s fourth goal of the game with 11:01 left in the period.  
  • The Orange responded with a goal made by Mik Todd as she fired a goal from the top left corner to cut the score down to 4-2 in favor of the Nittany Lions with 9:08 remaining in the third frame. 
  • A pair of passes at the blue line by Lobdell and Brooks eventually fell in the stick of Christian as she ripped her second power-play goal of the night to secure the 5-2 victory with less than a minute to go in the third period.  

GOALTENDERS 

  • Junior Lauren Barbro recorded 16 saves on 18 shots for the Nittany Lions. Her record improves to 3-0-0 on the season.
  • Syracuse goalie Allie Kelley tallied 30 saves on 35 shots. Her record dropped to 1-9-0 on the year. 

STATS AND NOTES 

  • Christian becomes the fourth Nittany Lion in program history to score two power-play goals in the same game.  
  • Stecker recorded her first goal of the season. 
  • Penn State’s record improves to 9-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in AHA play while Syracuse drops to 2-9-0 overall and 0-2-0 in AHA play.  
  • Lobdell recorded her second three-point game of the season with three assists on the day.  
  • This is the fourth series sweep of Syracuse in program history. 
  • The Nittany Lions have now scored multiple power-play goals in two games this season.
