The Michigan State Spartans have received a commitment from Youngstown Phantoms goaltender Melvin Strahl, it was announced Tuesday.
Drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, Strahl will join the Spartans for 2025-26.
A native of Solleftea, Sweden, Strahl is in his first USHL season, having posted a 3-2-0 record to go along with a 2.52 GAA and a .910 SV% through five appearances thus far.
Before making the jump to North America, Strahl played junior hockey in Sweden with both Solleftea and MoDo. Standing at 6-foot-3, Strahl moves well in his net, displaying solid lateral movement and the ability to track the puck through traffic.
With Strahl making an impact early for the Phantoms, this is a good get for the Spartans. Although the Phantoms currently sit last in their conference, the season is still young and Strahl gives the team a good chance to win when he is between the pipes.
