Georgia hockey picks up two wins in Texas to remain unbeaten | Georgia Sports

The Georgia Ice Dawgs defeated Texas 3-1 on Friday and 4-3 on Sunday at Chaparral Ice Arena in Austin to improve to a record of 7-0-2.

Georgia football was not the only group of Bulldogs to succeed in Austin over the weekend. With this pair of wins, the Ice Dawgs sit alongside the Tennessee Ice Vols as the only remaining teams in the College Hockey South conference without a loss.

The Ice Dawgs began play against the Longhorns on Friday, Oct. 18. Sophomore forward Wyatt McAvoy scored the opening tally for the Ice Dawgs to go up 1-0. After a Longhorns goal tied the game 1-1, senior defenseman Jack Gannon reclaimed the lead with a go-ahead goal. Gannon’s tally would stand as the game-winning goal, with junior forward Ryan Bailey adding an insurance marker to cap off the 3-1 win.

When the Ice Dawgs and Longhorns faced off again on Sunday afternoon, goals were hard to come by at first. Texas led the game 1-0 at the end of the first period, and Bailey tied the game up at 1-1 heading into second intermission.

Scoring picked up in the third period. While trailing 1-1, sophomore forward Evan Moore scored to tie the game at 2-2. Junior defenseman Truman Haugen scored the next goal, before Texas tied the game once again, forcing overtime. The Ice Dawgs and Longhorns ended up in a shootout, where junior forward Declan Conway scored to secure a 4-3 walk-off victory.

Georgia’s next two games are against the Delaware Blue Hens, which will take place in Macon, Georgia. The games are a part of the Ice Dawgs’ partnership with the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Professional Hockey League and Visit Macon, who will host “UGA Weekend” — a weekend that will include four total hockey games and a tailgate at the Macon Coliseum.
