Former Hurricane Tony DeAngelo Signs in Russia

The Hockey News - Carolina Hurricanes

It seems like we may need to start calling SKA, ‘Carolina East’

SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL announced today that they have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal, making him the sixth player on their roster with either current or former ties to the Carolina Hurricanes.

DeAngelo joins Evgeni Kuznetsov, who also signed over in Russia this offseason, and prospects Alexander Nikishin (current SKA captain) and Timur Kol.

In addition, former Hurricanes Valentin Zykov and Sergei Tolchinsky are also on the team as well as Carolina development coach Daniel Bochner who works for the KHL squad too.

DeAngelo, 28, is coming off of a year in which he didn’t get much playing time, having appeared in just 40 total games for the Canes last season between the regular season and playoffs.

Before that though, DeAngelo had had an 11 goal and 42 point season in Philadelphia before being bought out, making him one of the few players in NHL history to be bought out twice.

While there’s still probably some offense to be had from his game, it seems that NHL clubs were turned away perhaps due to his weak defensive game and controversial past.

However, to be fair to DeAngelo, when he was called upon in the playoffs for Carolina, he was actually very solid and he was also very well liked in the locker room as well.
