The rich got richer Thursday night as the defending national champs received a huge piece of news on the recruiting front.
Mikey Berchild announced his commitment to Denver on Instagram just after 7:30 p.m. CDT, giving David Carle’s program another talented forward for the future. Berchild is considered one of the top prospects from the 2008 birth year.
Berchild hails from Excelsior, Minn., and is currently playing for the NTDP U17 team. He scored the overtime-winner last Saturday as the NTDP defeated the NAHL’s New Mexico Ice Wolves for their first win of the season. Berchild has two goals through two games.
Berchild, who is listed at 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, joins a Denver commit list that also features forwards Alexander Donovan, Brendan McMorrow, Lucas Sawchyn and Sam Spehar, among others. Berchild put up 68 points (24-44-68) over 60 games last season at Shattuck St. Mary’s. He also put up 106 points during the 2022-23 season while skating with Shattuck’s U14 AAA team.
The left-shot forward turns 17 in February and will likely join DU for the 2026-27 season.
Denver’s roster features five freshmen this season, four of which are NHL draft picks. The Pioneers are coming off a 32-win season and their NCAA-leading 10th national championship.
