In October 2023, the hockey community lost one of their own when former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson lost his life during a freak skate accident while skating with the Nottingham Panthers in the EIHL.

Earlier this week, the Panthers announced they would host a ceremony on December 14 to retire Johnson’s No. 47 and honor his life and career.
Undrafted, Johnson skated with the University of Minnesota-Duluth before landing a contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2017-18. He remained with the organization until the end of 2019-20, earning several call-ups to Pittsburgh and dressing for 13 NHL games.
During the 2020-21 season, Johnson joined his first European team, playing with the Malmö Redhawks in the SHL before returning to the AHL for a 14-game stint with the Ontario Reign.

The following season, he split time between the Reign and Lehigh Valley Phantoms before jumping to the DEL in Germany and the Panthers in Switzerland. He was producing at a point-per-game pace at the time of the incident.
Johnson’s North American totals included 50 goals and 137 points in 257 AHL games, with one goal and four points in 13 NHL games. He was just 29 at the time of the accident.
