All six of the former University of Wisconsin men’s hockey players who entered the transfer portal after last season have found a new place to play.
Defenseman Luke LaMaster is headed for Alaska for his final season of eligibility after spending four seasons with the Badgers and graduating in the spring.
LaMaster wasn’t on the Wisconsin roster at the start of the 2023-24 season. He was left off after coach Mike Hastings trimmed the corps of defensemen to eight.
But a midseason departure and an injury led to the Badgers bringing back LaMaster, who stayed at UW-Madison to finish his degree in life sciences communications. He appeared on the team’s line chart for the Jan. 5 game at Notre Dame but that was his only time dressing in the final 20 games of the season.

LaMaster was one of eight Badgers seniors honored before the final regular-season home game on March 2.
He played in 65 games over his first three seasons, most often as a depth defenseman and in penalty-killing roles. He scored the only goal in his Wisconsin career against Ohio State on Jan. 20, 2023.
Alaska is scheduled for a trip to Wisconsin this season. The Nanooks are part of the field for the Holiday Face-Off on Dec. 28-29 in Milwaukee. UConn and Ferris State also are joining the Badgers in the tournament.
LaMaster was the last of six transfers from last season’s Badgers roster to make his future plans known. Forwards Sam Stange (Omaha), William Whitelaw (Michigan), Charlie Stramel (Michigan State) and Cruz Lucius (Arizona State) and defenseman Brady Cleveland (Colorado College) also entered the portal in April.
Wisconsin brought in four players out of the transfer portal — goalie Tommy Scarfone and forward Cody Laskosky from RIT and forwards Ryland Mosley and Kyle Kukkonen from Michigan Tech — and has eight incoming freshmen for the 2024-25 season.
The schedule hasn’t been released but Wisconsin and Omaha have announced plans for an Oct. 5 exhibition in Omaha on the first day that games can be played.
