You can’t keep Marshfield out of the NHL news cycle lately.

Just 12 days after former Marshfield High star Ryan Warsofsky was promoted to head coach of the San Jose Sharks, another town product grabbed the spotlight Tuesday as former Thayer Academy standout Jeremy Roenick was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“I’m so happy, I can’t thank everyone who was behind this honor enough,” Roenick said in a statement. “I’m at a loss for words and I’m never at a loss for words. Getting over this last hockey hurdle means so much to me.”

Roenick, 54, previously was inducted into the Mass. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002 and the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

Roenick told NHL.com’s Tracey Myers that he was at a Starbuck’s drive-through when he got the latest call.

“I couldn’t give them my money, couldn’t get my coffee. The guy was looking at me with tears in my eyes. It was kind of embarrassing but also one of the greatest moments ever,” he said. “I had just gotten out of the gym and saw a 416 number and I froze. This is crazy for me.”

Roenick, a center who scored 513 goals over a 20-year NHL career, was announced as part of the Hall’s Class of 2024. He will be joined by Pavel Datsyuk, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Detroit Red Wings (2002, 2008); Shea Weber, a standout defenseman with the Nashville Predators and Montreal Canadiens; and former United States women’s national team forwards Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl. Those five will be inducted as players.

Former general manager David Poile and current NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell also will be inducted in the Builders Category.

The ceremony will take place in Toronto on Nov. 11.

Roenick debuted with the Blackhawks in the 1988-89 season and made an immediate splash with 9 goals and 9 assists in just 20 games. He never stopped scoring, hitting for 26, 41, 53, 50 and 46 goals over his first five full NHL seasons.
