On this date in Penguins history: June 12 is a great day for Pittsburgh hockey

Today is a great day for hockey in Pittsburgh.

June 12 is a special day for the Penguins’ organization as two of the team’s five Stanley Cup victories have fallen on that day.

In 2009, the underdog Penguins pulled off the impossible and upset the Red Wings in Game 7 on the road in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Maxime Talbot was the unlikely hero that fateful night in Detroit as he put two pucks past Chris Osgood.

The Red Wings’ onslaught in the third period was enough to test the nerves of any Penguins fan and Marc-Andre Fleury’s diving save late in the game was a moment of magic.

Seven years later, the Penguins went into San Jose and played the game of their lives, beating the Sharks en route to their fourth Stanley Cup title.

An unlikely goal scorer appeared in Brian Dumoulin before the Sharks tied the game in the 2nd period.

Enter Kris Letang for one of the signature moments of his career.

With one period to go, the Sharks were facing elimination and the Penguins didn’t allow them any chances to tie things up.

Just two shots on goal for the Sharks and an empty-net goal for the Penguins and the Stanley Cup was coming back to Pittsburgh.

June 12 will always be a great day for hockey.
