Michigan State’s hockey team is slated to take part in a series of Big Ten hockey games at Wrigley Field in Chicago this coming winter.
MSU athletic director Alan Haller confirmed on Wednesday a report by the Wisconsin State Journal’s Todd Milewski that MSU was part of a Big Ten endeavor focused on playing games at Wrigley Field sometime after the NHL’s Winter Classic is played there on Dec. 31, likely in early January.
“Based on what I’ve been told by the conference, yes, it’s going to happen,” Haller said.
The only stipulation on MSU’s end was that its game at Wrigley not be one of its games against Michigan, preferring those remain in state.
Milewski reported that six Big Ten teams would take part — everyone but Minnesota — meaning it would be three separate games on the ice at the Chicago Cubs’ famed ballpark.
MSU hockey is no stranger to outdoor games. The Spartans most recently played Michigan at Chicago’s Soldier Field in 2015. They’ve also played outdoors at Comerica Park, Michigan Stadium and Spartan Stadium.
MSU famously hosted the the Wolverines in “The Cold War” at Spartan Stadium in 2001, which set what was then a world-wide attendance record for an ice hockey game.
