IIHF women's world championship scores, updates, schedule for April 13

The U.S. and Canada are one win each away from a 22th meeting in the International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship gold medal game Sunday at the Adirondack Bank Center.

Team USA plays Finland, a team it defeated 5-3 in pool play, in Saturday’s 3 p.m. semifinal, with the game between Canada and Czechia to follow; Canada shut out Czechia 5-0 in an earlier meeting.

The two semifinals follow Saturday’s opener, the fifth-place game between Germany and Switzerland, which will determine the fifth spot in Pool A for next year’s tournament hosted by Czechia.

Laila Edwards had a hat trick, Savannah Harmon and Hannah Bilka each scored her first tournament goal, and the United States shut out Finland 5-0 Saturday in the IIHF World Women’s Championship semifinals.

Aerin Frankel made 15 saves in the fifth US shutout of the tournament.

The U.S. went unbeaten in pool play, including the April 6 win over Finland, which defeated only Switzerland in Pool A.

Team USA advanced Thursday with a 10-0 victory over Japan at the end of a day that started with Finland’s second win over Switzerland by a 3-1 score.

The U.S. has played in all 22 gold medal games dating back to the first Women’s World Championship in 1990. Finland was beaten by the United States in the 2019 final as the only team other than the U.S. and Canada to play for gold in tournament history.

Canada, a medalist in all 22 previous Women’s World Championships and owner of 12 golds, takes on Czechia, the bronze medalist at the last two tournaments and the host next year, in Saturday’s second semifinal.

Canada lost only once in pool play – 1-0 in overtime to the United States – and advanced with Thursday’s 5-1 win over Sweden.
