Former Yale Standout Alex Lyon Named Finalist for NHL's Masterton Trophy

DETROIT, Mich. – Former Yale men’s ice hockey All-American goaltender, Alex Lyon, has been named the Detroit Red Wings’ finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as announced by the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Masterton Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game each year. Lyon started the 2023-24 season as the Red Wings’ third-string backup goaltender and morphed into a regular in between the pipes for the red and white. This season, he has started 41 games for Detroit and tallied 20 wins, which is more than double any season he has been in the NHL. His highest single-season starts total was 14 during the 2022-23 season, while the most wins he has had in a single season was nine in the very same season.

Speaking with Connor Earegood of the Hockey News, Lyon said, “It really makes me feel because it’s not even just the first 40 games. It’s been a long path for me and there’s been a lot of times when I didn’t necessarily know what was gonna happen. I guess I just feel proud because I just always tried to fight and continued to do the right things and continued to try to have a good attitude, and it was really difficult at times.”

Lyon signed as a free agent with the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers following his junior season at Yale. He played in 13 games for the Flyers over parts of two seasons and gained national attention for making 94 saves on 95 shots during a five-overtime AHL playoff game with Lehigh Valley in 2018. He is now in his seventh season in the NHL. His seven seasons in the league have been scattered across four organizations, both within the NHL and their AHL affiliates: Philadelphia, Carolina, Florida, and his current stop in Detroit. Lyon won the 2022 Calder Cup Trophy with the Chicago Wolves, Carolina’s AHL-affiliate.

Lyon, who owns the Yale record for career goals against (1.88), save percentage (.931), wins (50) and shutouts (15), was outstanding throughout the Wolves’ run to the championship. He posted a 9-3 record in the postseason, including a pair of shutouts.

At Yale, Lyon was a finalist for Richter Award, which is presented to the nation’s top goaltender and also was a Hobey Baker Award Top-10 finalist. In addition, he was a two-time All-America selection and received the Ken Dryden Award…
