Wisconsin's Charlie Stramel enters transfer portal

University of Wisconsin men’s hockey players who were second-, third- and fourth-round NHL draft picks went into the transfer portal Monday and Tuesday.






Charlie Stramel, a first-round pick of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, had just 20 points in 67 games over two seasons with the Badgers.




The Badgers’ first-round pick followed them Wednesday. Forward Charlie Stramel’s name went into the portal after he struggled to produce in two seasons at Wisconsin and saw his ice time decrease under first-year coach Mike Hastings.

Wisconsin also had its first arrival through the transfer portal Wednesday: Forward Ryland Mosley said he’ll use his final season of eligibility with the Badgers in 2024-25 after posting back-to-back 30-point seasons with Michigan Tech.

Stramel, who was the 21st overall pick by the Minnesota Wild last year, was the fifth Badgers player to seek a transfer since the team started having player meetings this week in the wake of last Friday’s end of the season.

Stramel’s longtime friend, forward William Whitelaw, went into the portal Tuesday; he was a third-round pick by Columbus in 2023. Defensemen Brady Cleveland (second round by Detroit in 2023) and Luke LaMaster also are seeking transfers, as is forward Sam Stange (fourth round by Detroit in 2020).
