Michigan exploded for four third-period goals Sunday night against rival Michigan State to earn its third straight trip to the NCAA Frozen Four, but it was a pass that might’ve fueled the biggest moment of the pivotal frame.
Sophomore forward Frank Nazar III threaded a between-the-legs pass on an odd-man rush to teammate Gavin Brindley, who buried Michigan’s second goal in a 12-second span, creating a two-goal cushion at the 12:54 mark in a 5-2 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal victory at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
After entering the third period in a 1-1 deadlock with Michigan State, the region’s top seed, Nazar’s pass set up what essentially was the victory-securing dagger for third-seeded Michigan.
And, it set social media ablaze in hockey circles.
Nazar, a Mount Clemens native, was selected No. 13 overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He has 41 points (17 goals) in 40 games this season for the Wolverines.
Michigan (23-14-3) will take on tournament No. 1 overall seed Boston College (33-5-1) at 8:30 p.m. April 11 in the Frozen Four at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Boston University (28-9-2) takes on Denver (30-9-3) in the first semifinal.
