PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Five players came to the University of Wisconsin bench after Ben Dexheimer flipped the puck into the neutral zone as the penalty kill ended.
Quinnipiac forward Victor Czerneckianair (14) is surrounded by teammates after scoring during the second period Friday in Providence, R.I.
Five others came on, but Quinnipiac already made the move that sent it into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and ended the Badgers’ season.
Victor Czerneckianair finished off a breakaway at the end of that play 11 minutes, 4 seconds into overtime to crush Wisconsin’s hopes with a 3-2 Bobcats victory at Amica Mutual Pavilion.
The Badgers killed the penalty but not the follow-up.
“We were close there,” Wisconsin goalie Kyle McClellan said. “They were just the ones that ended up getting it in the back of the net.”
Wisconsin’s line change left defenseman Daniel Laatsch as the only player back against three Quinnipiac skaters after Bobcats defenseman Davis Pennington retrieved the puck in his defensive zone and fired it up ice.
