Trinity hockey advances to Division III national championship game after 2-1 win over Adrian

HARTFORD — Connecticut be closing on its next national champion, but there is a significant obstacle standing in the way.

Sophomore goalie Devon Bobak, fresh off being named the Division III player of the year by the American Hockey Coaches Association, stopped 31 shots to lead the Trinity men’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over Adrian College on Thursday night and into the Division III national championship game.

The Bantams (25-3-1), hosts of the Frozen Four, will meet top seed and defending champion Hobart on Saturday night at 7 at the Koeppel Community Sports Center for the title. Trinity, ranked No. 2, last won the championship in 2015. Hobart (27-2-1) defeated Utica 3-1 in the first semifinal.

James Barbour gave the Bantams the lead at 13:29 of the first period. Devan Tongue scored what proved to be the winner at 1:32 of the second. Bradley Somers scored for Adrian at 13:56 of the second period.

Trinity is not unfamiliar with playing at this level. The Bantams were national champs in 2014-15 after ironically defeating Adrian again in the Frozen Four and then downing Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the title.

The were back in the final again in 2016-17 but lost to Norwich. Appearances in 2019 and 2022 resulted in opening-game losses.
