CHN Staff Report
New Hampshire coach Mike Souza, whose contract was set to expire, has agreed to a new deal with the school, sources tell CHN. An official announcement is expected later in the week. It’s believed to be for three years.
Souza has gone 78-99-21 in six seasons as head coach of his alma mater. In 2018, he took over for Dick Umile, who retired after 28 years.
After a lengthy run of success under Umile, UNH failed to qualify for the NCAAs in his last five seasons, and has not qualified for them since. However, this past season was Souza’s best, as the Wildcats won 20 games and had its first winning record since 2013-14.
New Hampshire was just eliminated in the Hockey East quarterfinals by Maine.
As a player, Souza had 66 goals and 157 points in 156 games from 1996-2000. He was a key forward on the 1999 team that lost in overtime to Maine in the NCAA championship game.
UNH changed athletic directors last year, with Allison Rich getting the job. She decided against giving Souza an extension last year, and instead spent this season as an evaluation period.
