Reading, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2024) – Three Alvernia University student-athletes earned MAC Player of the Week honors for their performances during the week of January 29 – February 4, 2024.
Julia Beaven and Julia Franklin swept MAC Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Week honors, and, for the third time in four weeks, Matthew Lackman was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week. It is also the fourth straight week an Alvernia wrestler was named MAC Wrestler of the Week.
Julia Beaven picked up two wins in goal for Alvernia as the Golden Wolves swept Lebanon Valley to secure the 2023-24 MAC Women’s Ice Hockey title. In a 4-2 win on Friday, Beaven made 21 saves in net to pick up the win. She followed that on Saturday with another 21 save performance to lead Alvernia to the MAC clinching win.
Julia Franklin finished the weekend with four points as Alvernia went 2-0 to pick up the 2023-24 MAC Women’s Ice Hockey title. In a 4-2 win over Lebanon Valley on Friday, Franklin scored a goal and assisted on another. She also had 12 wins in the faceoff circle. In a 3-1 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday, Franklin scored two goals, both unassisted and one short-handed, to lead Alvernia to a MAC clinching win. She also added another six faceoff wins to her stat line in the win.
Matthew Lackman went 2-0 in back-to-back duals for Alvernia on Friday and Saturday. In a 36-10 win over Penn College on Friday night, Lackman won the 165 lb bout by way of a 14-1 major decision. On Saturday in a 23-22 win over Elizabethtown, Lackman defeated #4 Brian Schneider with an 8-5 decision.
Women’s Ice Hockey is back in action on Friday for a non-conference series with Albertus Magnus. Men’s Wrestling is back in action on Friday night hosting York.
