No. 1 Buckeyes stifle UMD women's hockey - Duluth News Tribune

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State, the unanimous No. 1 team in the national Division I women’s hockey polls, never gave No. 7 Minnesota Duluth much of an opening on Friday, stymieing the Bulldogs 3-0 in the first of their two-game weekend series at OSU Ice Rink.

UMD had only 14 shots on goal for the game, with half of them coming in the first 20 minutes. Raygan Kirk stopped all of them for her fifth shutout of the season in 12 starts. Kirk also shut out the Bulldogs in Amsoil Arena in October, a 2-0 game that completed a Buckeye sweep of their first two meetings of the season.

OSU kept UMD goalie Hayley MacLeod much busier, generating 38 shots on goal.

The Buckeyes jumped out in front when Kelsey King was the victor in a goalmouth scramble with just 10 seconds remaining in the first period. Joy Dunne made it 2-0 with a snap shot from the right faceoff circle over MacLeod’s right shoulder with 2:59 left in the second frame. Kenzie Hauswirth finished it off late in the third.

UMD (13-8-2, 10-7-0 WCHA) and Ohio State play again on Saturday afternoon in Columbus at 1 p.m. as the Buckeyes go for the season series sweep.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
