Four Big Ten Hockey Teams Headed to NCAA Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill.

— Four Big Ten teams have been selected to participate in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship which begins Thursday.

The four bids are tied for the most among conferences and matches a Big Ten record that occurred in 2018 and 2021.

Big Ten Champion Minnesota (26-9-1) is the No. 1 overall seed and will host No. 4 seed Canisius (20-18-3) of Atlantic Hockey on Thursday, March 23, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 at Scheels Arena in the Fargo (N.D.) Regional. The top-ranked Golden Gophers are appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 40th time and for the third-straight year.

Big Ten Tournament Champion Michigan (24-11-3) is the top seed at the Allentown (Pa.) Regional and will face No. 4 seed Colgate (19-15-5) of ECAC Hockey on Friday, March 24, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU at PPL Center. The fourth-ranked Wolverines received the conference’s automatic berth and are making their 40th NCAA Tournament appearance and third-straight trip to the postseason.

 

No. 2 seed Penn State (21-15-1) is the host institution for the Allentown Regional and will take on No. 3 seed Michigan Tech (24-10-4) of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association on Friday, March 24, at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU at PPL Center. The No. 11/10-ranked Nittany Lions are making their third appearance in the NCAA Tournament, returning for the first time since 2018. 

 

No. 3 seed Ohio State (20-15-3) landed in the Bridgeport (Conn.) Regional and squares off against No. 2 seed Harvard (24-7-2) of ECAC Hockey on Friday, March 24, at 2 p.m. on ESPNU in Total Mortgage Arena. The eighth-ranked Buckeyes are making their 10th appearance in the NCAA postseason and first since 2019.

Regional winners will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four, to be held April 6-8, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.
