Nine Tar Heels Earn Spots On All-ACC Academic FH Team


Nine North Carolina student-athletes have earned spots on the 2022 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team for field hockey, announced Thursday afternoon by the ACC. The honor is based on both academic and athletic achievement.
 
Tar Heels honored are Sietske Brüning, Kennedy Cliggett, Katie Dixon, Madison Orobono, Romea Riccardo, Lisa Slinkert, Jasmina Smolenaars, Abigail Taylor and Kiersten Thomassey.
 
All were either starters or key reserves for the 2022 UNC team that went 21-0, winning NCAA and ACC titles.
 
Brüning is a midfielder/back from The Hague, The Netherlands, and is majoring in economics.
 
Cliggett is a forward from Warrington, Pa., and is majoring in exercise and sport science.
 
Dixon is a midfielder from Cary, N.C., and is majoring in statistics.
 
Orobono is a back from Macungie, Pa., and is majoring in media & journalism.
 
Riccardo is a back from Downingtown, Pa., and is also majoring in media & journalism.
 
Slinkert is a forward from The Hague, The Netherlands, and is majoring in management & society.
 
Smolenaars is a midfield from Weert, The Netherlands, and is majoring in communication studies.
 
Taylor is a goalkeeper from Cary, N.C. and is majoring in psychology.
 
Thomassey is a midfielder from Westerville, Ohio, and is majoring in communication studies.
 
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests.
