Tough weekend for Camden Hills ice hockey in pair of losses – Knox County VillageSoup

ROCKPORT — It was a tough weekend for the Camden Hills ice hockey team on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21 as the Windjammers managed only a single goal and were dealt a pair of losses to stand at .500 (5-5) on the high school rink campaign.

The Windjammers went on the road on Friday to face John Bapst of Bangor and fell 11-0 to the Crusaders, while they followed that performance with a 3-1 home loss to visiting Brewer on Saturday at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

The following is a recap of the weekend games:

Brewer 3, Camden Hills 1

At Rockport Jan. 21, the Witches were road warriors as they emerged with a two-goal victory over the host Windjammers. Camden Hills led 1-0 after the first period, while Brewer led 2-0 after two periods and added an insurance goal in the third.

Owen McManus scored the lone goal for Camden Hills, while Cam Dostie (goal), Grady Vanidestine (2 goals, assist) and Jed Gilpatrick (assist) paced Brewer.

Quinn Hoppin made 14 saves on 17 shots between the pipes for the Windjammers, while Ethan Hanscom made 23 saves on 24 shots in goal for the Witches.

Camden Hills held a 24-17 advantage in shots, but, ultimately, could not keep the visitors from seizing control.

John Bapst 11, Camden Hills 0

At Bangor Jan. 20, the Crusaders pounced on the Windjammers early and scored at will en route to a double-digit win. John Bapst led 4-0 after the first period and 5-0 after two periods before netting six more over the game’s final 15 minutes.

Carter Walls netted five goals in the win for John Bapst, while Curtis Brown (2 goals), Nate Tibbits (goal), Owen Marryatt (goal), Aiden Dunn (goal, 4 assists), Lucas Gagnon (goal, 2 assists), Caleb Robbins (4 assists) and Luke Getto (assist) also chipped in offensively for the Crusaders.

Quinn Hoppin made nine saves on 20 shots in goal for Camden Hills.

Walls scored the first five goals for John Bapst.

Veteran Windjammer coach John Magri said his squad dealt with significant adversity during the game, including the loss of players due to injury, one being freshman defensemen Flynn Lilly, who went feet first into the boards. He was cared for on the ice before being transported to the hospital for further evaluation, the coach said.

“This certainly left all players on both teams shaken as they all have a bond as hockey players and do not want to see anything tragic happen to anyone that hits the ice,” said Magri.
