On Saturday at Northford Ice Pavilion, Cheshire High School ice hockey (4-5) saw a late rally fall short in a 6-4 loss to unbeaten host North Haven (10-0). The Nighthawks scored twice in the first period and netted three goals in the second to build a 5-0 advantage, however, the Rams opened the third on a 3-0 run.
Just 33 seconds into the final frame, junior Biagio Pepe scored to snap the shutout. With 12:01 left, junior Drew DePodesta converted after passes from senior co-captain Rocco Ocone-Krause and junior Ryan Fraser.
Senior Gabe Magriz put in Cheshire’s third goal with 8:16 remaining. DePodesta and Ocone-Krause assisted on the play.
The Rams had cut the deficit to two goals, but a penalty for holding halted their momentum. With 6:03 left, senior Thomas Guidone scored on the power play to put NH up 6-3.
To cap the scoring with 23 seconds remaining, DePodesta recorded his second goal for the Rams. Pepe earned the assist.
In the first two periods, NH senior Owen Quick tallied a hat trick and an assist. Seniors Alex Petersen and William Sullivan also scored for the Nighthawks.
NH led 43-26 in shots. Senior goalkeeper Jack Falk posted a personal-high 37 saves.
Next Wednesday, the Rams come back to Northford to compete against host Daniel Hand (3-5) at 8:30 p.m.
Boys’ Basketball (3-9)
The Rams fell 76-38 at Southington (8-3). The Blue Knights built a 36-16 halftime lead.
For CHS, sophomore Bennett Crerar tied his career-high point total with 16. Junior Connor Hayes netted a personal-best eight points.
Senior tri-captain Drew Vagts scored four points in the opening quarter. Junior Ryan Grove had three points, while senior Chris O’Neal, junior Kyle Cyr, and sophomore Jackson Enders all had two. Junior tri-captain Matt Jeffery also made a free throw.
Senior Aidan Buck (19) and junior Ryan Hammarlund (12) recorded double-digit points for Southington.
Next Tuesday, CHS travels to play Branford (2-8) at 7 p.m. On Dec. 19, Cheshire won 57-47 in the first meeting.
Indoor Track and Field
In the Southern Connecticut Conference Coaches Invite, junior Alexa Ciccone won the girls’ 3,200-meters (11:06.17) and broke 2009 graduate Irene Kalbian’s school record at New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center. She also teamed with sophomores Sarah Goldstein and Eva Curran and junior Julia Rubin to place third (10:23.39) in the 4×800-meter relay.
For boys, junior Daniel D’Souza took 11th in the 1,600-meters (4:48.44).
Next Wednesday, Cheshire athletes return to the same site…
