Top 10 Moments for Women’s Ice Hockey: Maine Transitions from Club to a Division 1 Team

Orono, ME – In honor of 25 years of the program’s history, UMaine Athletics is highlighting the ten top moments of Maine women’s ice hockey over the past 25 years.

In the fall of 1998, Maine women’s ice hockey began their first season as a Division 1 team, setting the path for Maine women’s ice hockey going forward. The program was first affiliated with ECAC Hockey until 2001-02, when they switched to the newly formed Women’s Hockey East where they remain today. Maine was a part of the five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women to join the Hockey East Association, the other four were: Boston College, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence.

In the first season of the program, Maine put up an impressive 12-6-2 overall record and a 9-6-1 conference record.

This team also set multiple records during their time that still stand today. The 1997-98 team is tied with the 2004-05 team with the longest winning streak at seven. They also have the most goals per game average at 3.80. Alison Lorenz set multiple personal records this season including being tied for third with most game winning goals with eight. Lorenz also holds the record for most goals in a single season held at 38 and is tied for third for most assists in a single season with 22. Lorenz also had two different standout games to help her gather more records. Lorenz scored five goals against Conn. College which earned her the most goals in a single game and she also got the most points in a single game with six versus Amherst College.

Amy Oliver was a standout in net for the 1997-98 Black Bears. She appeared in 20 games between the pipes with a 2.43 goals allowed average, 487 saves, .919 save percentage, with two recorded shutouts.
