Thompson Tallies a Goal Against #10 Cornell

Syracuse junior Sarah Thompson scored her ninth goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to #10 Cornell on Tuesday at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The junior punched the puck past Big Red goaltender Belle Mende with 1:15 remaining in the game on assists from graduate student Lauren Bellefontaine and freshman Rhea Hicks on a Syracuse power play. The game was the fifth consecutive and 11th this season against a top-15 team for the Orange (7-15-1 overall, 4-2 College Hockey America).
 
“We have to stay positive and find little things in our game that we can build energy and momentum off of to stay in it,” said head coach Britni Smith. “I thought tonight our penalty kill did a good job and we found energy on the bench on a blocked shot, a good drive on net, and all of the little things.”
 
Orange goaltender Arielle DeSmet continued her ascent up the CHA career saves record list moving into 14th with 31 saves, increasing her career total to 1,999 in 79 games. With one more save she will become the 14th CHA goalie to record 2,000 career saves.
 
“Arielle has done a great job stepping up on and off the ice to be that calm leader for us,” Smith said. “She speaks up in the locker room when it is needed and on the ice tonight she made some pretty big saves for us. She is someone we rely on a lot in a leadership role.” 
 
Bellefontaine also moved closer to a personal milestone with her 97th career point, which ranks fifth on the Orange career scoring list. She is vying to become the fifth skater in the Syracuse…
