COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its first nonconference matchup of the season, the No. 1 Ohio State women’s tied No. 6 Colgate, 4-4, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. While the game officially goes on the record as a tie, the Buckeyes (12-1-2, 12-1-1 WCHA) won the shootout in seven rounds off goals from Lauren Bernard and Makenna Webster and six saves made by goaltender Amanda Thiele.

How it Happened

Not missing a beat after returning from the 2022 USA vs. Canada Rivalry Series, Gabby Rosenthal tallied the Buckeyes’ first goal at 5:57 into the game. Lauren Bernard and Jenn Gardiner earned the assists on the opening goal.

Just 1:39 later, Kenzie Hauswirth put another past Colgate goaltender Kayle Osborne to bring the Ohio State lead to 2-0. She was assisted by Brook Bink and Madison Bizal.

The Raiders scored at 17:11 in the first period to cut Ohio State’s advantage in half off a goal from Kassy Betinol. The Buckeyes went to the locker room at the first intermission ahead, 2-1.

Rosenthal started the second period with another goal, connecting with Gardiner and Bernard again. This time, it she scored just 1:21 into the second frame to restore Ohio State’s two-goal lead.

Colgate went on to score two consecutive goals – one at 4:25 from Danielle Serdachny and the second at 9:58 by Kaitlyn O’Donohoe – to tie the game at 3-3 in the second period.

Ohio State regained the lead at 18:45 in the period thanks to a goal from Jenna Buglioni to take a one-score lead into the second intermission. Buglioni’s goal, which would be Ohio State’s final of the day, was assisted by Rosenthal and Jaques.

The Raiders scored the lone goal of the third period at 14:29 to tie the game at 4-4. The teams battled through five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, but after 65 total minutes of play, the game ended in a tie. Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele made three saves in the overtime period to help secure the draw.

The teams played a best-of-three shootout that went to seven rounds. Colgate’s Serdachny scored in the second round, but Bernard forced the shootout to continue with a goal in the third round. Makenna Webster finished the game in the seventh round, scoring her penalty shot to win the shootout for the Buckeyes. Thiele stopped six of seven shots to secure the win.
