Team USA sweeps Canada in first part of Rivalry Series


MADISON, Wis. — Team USA has captured the first three games against Canada in the five-game Rivalry Series this past week. Seven former Badgers are featured on the rosters for the series, representing both the United States and Canada.

Hilary Knight and Abby Roque are among those on the roster for Team USA, while Kristen Campbell, Emily Clark, Ann-Renee Desbiens, Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull represent Canada. Each of those seven Badgers also represented their respective teams in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship. Canada and the United States competed in the gold medal game at each event, with Canada coming out victorious in each match. 

Game One: Tuesday, Nov. 15 (4-3 (SO), USA)

The series kicked off with a thrilling shootout win from Team USA at Prospera Place in Kelowna, B.C. After being up 2-0, including a goal from Knight, USA gave up three goals to Canada, with the third coming from Clark to put Canada up 3-2. With just over a minute to go, Team USA tied things up, with Knight and Roque each picking up an assist on the crucial goal. With no goals being scored in OT, the game went to a shootout, where USA won 2-0 with the help of Knight. 
 

Game Two: Thursday, Nov. 17 (2-1, USA)

Thanks to a late third period goal, USA topped Canada 2-1 at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops, B.C. to wrap up the Canadian portion of the series. Knight picked up an assist on the game-winning goal. Campbell was in goal for Canada, grabbing 32 of 34 of the shots against her. 

Game Three: Sunday, Nov. 20 (4-2, USA)

Team USA grabbed their third consecutive win against Canada at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, advancing to 3-0 in the series. After being honored before the game for her all-time points record in the IIHF Women’s World Championship, Knight tallied two goals and an assist to help lead the United States to victory. Roque also contributed to the four USA goals with a power play goal in the second period. Desbiens was in between the pipes for Canada, stopping 29 of USA’s 33 shots.
