Jaques Sets Program Record in Ohio State’s 7-1 Victory Over Bemidji State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1/2 Ohio State women’s hockey team earned a 7-1 win over Bemidji State on Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink to sweep the regular-season series against the Beavers. In the win, graduate defenseman Sophie Jaques set the Ohio State record for career points by a defenseman.

How it Happened

Continuing its three-goal third period momentum from Friday night, the Buckeyes opened game two of the series with a three-goal first period. Sloane Matthews put Ohio State on the board just 1:46 into the game off assists from Jenn Gardiner and Hadley Hartmetz. Later in the period, Emma Peschel capitalized on the Buckeyes’ second power play opportunity of the day, scoring just seven seconds after the Bemidji State penalty at 15:11. Kenzie Hauswirth and Jenna Buglioni earned the helpers on the goal. Hartmetz lit the lamp less than two minutes later at 17:09 to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead at the first intermission thanks to an assist from Makenna Webster.

The Scarlet and Gray continued their offensive pressure against Bemidji in the second period, adding another two goals in the frame. Gardiner scored her first power play goal of the season 2:51 into the period off helpers from Matthews and Sophie Jaques. Hartmetz followed that up at 9:37 for her second goal of the day to bring the Buckeyes’ lead to 5-0. She was assisted by Hauswirth. Bemidji State managed to get one past Ohio State goaltender Raygan Kirk at 18:49 to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Buckeyes after 40:00 of play.

Jaques and Sydney Morrow tallied the Buckeyes’ final goals of the game to bring the score to 7-1. Jaques scored the Buckeyes’ third power play goal of the game at 2:36 into the period while Morrow found the back of the net at 10:50. Madison Bizal earned an assist on Jaques’ goal while Gardiner and Buglioni added their second assists of the day.

Kirk finished with 11 saves on the day to improve to 3-0-1 on the year for the Buckeyes. Overall, Ohio State won the faceoff battle, 26-23, and outshot the Beavers, 38-12.

Game Notes

  • With a goal and an assist in the game, Sophie Jaques has tallied 130 points for her career as a Buckeye and officially moves ahead of Tessa Bonhomme to become the Ohio State record holder in career points by a defenseman. The Toronto, Ont. native has scored 50 goals and dished 80 assists in her career.
