Two Former Black Bears Face-Off from Behind the Bench in the NHL

ORONO, Maine — Jim Montgomery, head coach of the Boston Bruins, and John Tortorella, head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, faced-off last night, Thursday, November 17, 2022, in the National Hockey League.
 
The two former Black Bears combined to spend seven years as players at the University of Maine. Tortorella compiled 39 goals and 71 assists in 99 games, while Montogomey finished his career at Maine as a national champion and the school’s all-time leading scorer with 301 points (103 G, 198 A). Montgomery’s number 19 was retired by the men’s ice hockey program.
 
Torts, starting his coaching career in 1988, has led 12 teams to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, while winning the 2003-04 Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Monty, starting his NHL coaching career in 2018, is in his first season with the Boston Bruins.
 
The Boston Bruins won the Thursday night contest in the TD Garden by a score of 4-1.
