Troublesome Third Period Stalls Irish – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the score all tied up heading into the final period, the Notre Dame hockey program allowed three late goals, including an empty netter, as they fell to Ohio State, 5-2, Friday night.

For the third consecutive game, the Irish conceded an early goal as the Buckeyes capitalized on a screen out front at 4:06 of the opening period.

The Irish continued to pressure the Buckeye end, firing 10 shots on goal in the opening frame to OSU’s four. On their final shot of the period, the Blue and Gold were rewarded as Trevor Janicke’s shot hit twine to tie the game at 1-1.

Fin Williams gave the Irish their first lead of the night, making it 2-1 at 3:18 of the second period. The lead was short lived however as the Buckeyes evened the tally three minutes later with a shorthanded goal.

A slew of penalties filled the remaining minutes of the second period but the score remain knotted as both teams skated to the locker rooms looking to break the stalemate in the final period of regulation.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes of the third period, the score remain tied at the media timeout but a pair of quick goals for OSU, including a powerplay tally, found the Irish trailing 4-2 late in the game.

Notre Dame continued to battle, eventually pulling Bischel in favor of the extra attacker but an empty net tally from the Buckeyes sealed their fate as they dropped game one of the weekend series.

GOALS

  • With 44 seconds left in the opening period and a powerplay opportunity stifled, Trevor Janicke found the back of the net off a pass from Chase Blackmun. The duo connected behind the Buckeye net before Janicke posted up to the right of the crease to bury a centering pass from Blackmun to knot the game up. Jackson Pierson was also credited with an assist on the goal.
  • Fin Williams scored his first collegiate point with a shot from the near-impossible angle. Skating in along the boards, Williams picked up a feed from Tyler Carpenter before firing a shot on net. Fellow linemate Hunter Strand, who gathered the puck in the defensive zone, also picked up an assist on the play.
