Union Battles Back to Defeat RIT in Season Opener

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men’s hockey team earned their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, scoring three unanswered goals to defeat Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-3, to give head coach Josh Hauge a win in his head coaching debut Saturday night at Messa Rink.

In the win, Union moves to 7-0-1 against the Tigers.

First-year Carter Korpi netted his first two collegiate goals in the win. Sophomore Josh Nixon added his first goal for Union and fellow transfer senior Chris Theodore added three assists. First-year Nate Hanley added two assists for his first collegiate points. Sophomore Caden Villegas picked up his fourth career goal.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first stanza, finding the back of the net twice. Andrew Tanner beat senior Connor Murphy from the right side to take a 1-0 lead at 9:09 before Evan Miller got one past Murphy with just under 26 seconds left to play in the period.

The Dutchmen were quick to respond with Korpi scoring only 2:38 into the second frame. After Nixon broke up a pass in the offensive end of the ice, and dished the puck to a waiting Theodore at the blue line. Theodore sent it back to Nixon at the top of the right circle, who redirected it to Korpi, who beat netminder Tommy Scarfone stick side. The one goal deficit was short-lived as Cody Laskosky buried a puck only 2:10 later to give RIT a 3-1 lead.
