IIHF - Ljungblom suspended

The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Women’s Championship Ad Hoc Disciplinary Panel has issued a one-game suspension against Swedish player Lina Ljungblom.

Ljungblom was assessed a major penalty for checking from behind at 16:02 of the third period during yesterday’s Sweden-Germany game.

A formal hearing was held today in which a representative of the Swedish team acknowledged the checking-from-behind infraction and explained that the player did not have time to react and do something different, that the hit was not hard and that she neither intended to hit the opposing player, Germany’s Katarina Jobst-Smith, from behind nor to injure her.

The Disciplinary Panel determined that even though it seemed the player did not have much time to react once turning around and seeing her opponent, and even though the player was not moving at a high speed, the player’s actions of following through with her left arm when making contact coupled with the dangerous proximity of the boards recklessly endangered her opponent and is a violation of the IIHF Official Playing Rule 43 (Checking from Behind).

Therefore Ljungblom will be sanctioned with a one-game suspension, specifically tomorrow’s game Hungary vs. Sweden.
