Ohio State-Michigan hockey set for FirstEnergy Stadium in February – News-Herald

The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry on ice is headed to FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Haslam Sports Group on Aug. 21 announced the Buckeyes and Wolverines will meet in the first hockey game ever played at the Browns’ home stadium on Saturday, Feb. 18. Starting time for the game being billed as “Faceoff on the Lake” will be determined at a later date.

“Haslam Sports Group is dedicated to creating unique, memorable experiences for fans throughout the year, and we are excited to partner with the Ohio State University for Faceoff on the Lake, the first major outdoor hockey game at FirstEnergy Stadium,” HSG Chief Commercial Officer Eric Clouse told the Browns’ website. “It will be an incredible environment for both fans and community programs alike who are passionate about this unparalleled college rivalry. We anticipate this to be a truly special atmosphere.”

Ticket pricing will be announced in the coming days. Season ticket holders to the Browns or the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer can begin buying tickets at 10 a.m. Aug. 29 through tickets@clevelandbrowns.com or by dialing 440-891-5050. Anyone currently on the Browns’ waiting list for season tickets can also jump in on the early sale. Tickets to the general public go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 7.

“We’re excited to partner with the Haslam Sports Group to provide this unique outdoor hockey game experience for our student-athletes,” Shaun Richard, executive associate athletics director – sport administration at Ohio State, said. “Playing hockey outdoors is something most hockey players did growing up, and now they’ll get to do that in an NFL stadium in front of tens of thousands of people, in the greatest rivalry in all of sports.”

This won’t be the first time the Buckeyes and Wolverines played an outdoors game in Cleveland. The Big Ten rivals clashed on Jan. 15, 2012, at Progressive Field in the “Frozen Diamond Faceoff.” Michigan won the game, 4-1 before 25,864 fans — the largest crowd to ever watch a hockey game in Ohio. The temperature at the opening faceoff at 5:30 p.m. was 27 degrees with no snow.

Ohio State and Michigan will be satisfied with similar weather conditions this time around.

“This is a great opportunity for our program,” Steve Rohlik, beginning his 10th year as head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “We are excited to have the chance to play in a rivalry game outdoors in the home of the Browns. It is an experience that will create memories for a…
