CREVE COEUR — On a recent morning, Creve Coeur Ice Arena was filled with noise as a couple dozen kids played pickup hockey and practiced their shots on goal.
The city-owned rink is like a second home to some of these hockey players, but this year its future has been thrown into uncertainty as Creve Coeur officials weigh whether to dedicate potentially millions of dollars to needed repairs.
The arena opened in the early 1970s as the first enclosed municipal skating rink in St. Louis County, according to stories in the Post-Dispatch at the time. But today, it needs some big ticket items, including a new dehumidifier system and refrigeration to manage the ice.
The Creve Coeur Ice Arena has been a place to skate and play hockey and curling since it opened around 1970.
A consultant’s report in 2021 estimated the major repairs at about $2.2 million, but total costs are likely to be higher given recent inflation, said City Administrator Mark Perkins.
Creve Coeur City Council members at a work session this week reached a consensus to try to save the rink, situated next to the city-owned golf course on Olde Cabin Road.
