Ice Hockey: No. 15 St. Augustine potentially finds its turning point

St. Augustine has been desperately searching for a signature moment to provide the spark.

Charlie DiCarlo might have finally supplied it.

The Hermits, No. 15 in the NJ.com Top 20 have seen several games slip away and Friday night’s bout against No. 4 Gloucester Catholic at the Igloo Ice Rink in Mount Laurel had that same feeling.

The team held a one-goal lead late into the third period, where the Rams tied it on a power-play goal from Ryder Wicken with 1:01 to play in regulation.

“This game wasn’t over,” said St. Augustine coach Tim Fingerhut. “You just have to put it behind you and focus. There’s a minute of hockey left and you have a chance to make a play. Let’s do something with it.”

The team responded and forced a turnover in the neutral zone that ended up on DiCarlo’s stick. He picked the corner 30 seconds later to restore a one-goal lead and St. Augustine held on for a 2-1 win.
